So the thermostat on my brother's MKIII Supra stuck shut... and it warped the head. So I guess it's engine swap time. Apparently, my parents are going to get him a JDM 1JZ or 2JZ engine, so that's kind of cool. But it mean s that now I have no manual car to borrow for fun times. :(
Here's my car and his together. With my mom's W123 creeping in the background. Luckily, we already have a lift, from a previous swap we did in my Miata. So it'll be another long weekend.

Why not save money, weight and complexity and swap in an LSX?

This isn't the MKIV in question right? Because that would be a MKIII.

because he has an imagination and not everything needs an LSX

EVERYTHING is better with an LSX.

Shhh, I don't know what you're talking about :)
The MKIV is the F&F one then?

There is not a single front engine RWD car that would not be better with an LS engine.
I will even define better for you. Better in this case means with inclusion of equal power adders the car will be faster, make more power with equal money spent, is more reliable, cheaper, easier to maintain, and has better aftermarket support.

Good luck on a 2JZ or 1JZ swap. Your broseph's car appears to be an 86.5-88 Supra (not sure if turbo; can't see wing), which means he has the square mounts which WON'T fit a JZ engine. If he can source a front cross-member with round mounts from a late 89+ (early 89s were square mounts as well) he can bolt in a JZ engine, but you still have to do tons of wiring. If it's turbo and 5-speed, you need a JZ bellhousing off a 1JZ-GTE Supra/Soarer. If it's a non-turbo and 5-speed it's a W58 that needs a bellhousing off an IS300/SC300/MKIV Supra. Also the W series transmission is going to last you until 300hp, at which point it'll bite the dust (I've had 3 W58s and currently a W55, one was on a turbo 7MGTE). I've had 3 MKIII Supras and I loved them, but unless you rebuild the 7M properly (AND I MEAN PROPERLY), you're going to have to drop thousands and thousands of dollars.

Nothing worse than an $8 part failing and costing you several thousand.

So basically, the best he can do easily would be a 7MGTE? It's a non-turbo, 5 speed.

Yeah. I went 7MGTE in my 89 N/A 5-speed, kept it W58. Just reuse the 7MGE flywheel. I also went 2JZ-GE on my 92, but that was a frankenstein car. That one had a 2JZ out of an Sc300, MKIV NA flywheel, 7MGE clutch/pressure plate, IS300 bellhousing/headers, Mercedes C300 fans, all on 7MGE electronics/ECU.

Sounds like LSX - T56 would cure all the ills.

3sgte's have the same bellhousing? That would take a lot of weight off the front

Which is why you buy the best "cheap" parts available and drill a small "weep" hole in your thermostat.

"better AM support"
IDK about that. 2JZ and RB AM is pretty freaking insane. not to mention AM for the VQ motors

It looked 110% stock, minus a pipe I used for a cold air intake, but alas.....a truck hit it in a parking lot and I sold it...I used the money to get my IS300 though, so it wasn't a total waste!

I would hesitate to do much work on a MKIII, once the MAF goes (and it will) you cannot find a replacement part anywhere in the world. The only work-around is using an oversized Lexus MAF then installing an outboard fuel computer, an expensive and ugly solution. It's bad enough these things eat head gaskets like crazy, but not being able to source replacement parts is reason enough not to bother with them.

There's SIX different aftermarket versions of the LSX block... Not to mention hundreds cylinder heads.

the reason I said I'm not sure is because thats just for the states. I'm not sure how the AM is for the LSX in eruope or japan.

you can international ship just about anything, how do you think the supra's here get their JDM yo factor?

nope, nowhere near close. The only RWD 3S application has been the Altezza, but that doesn't use a W or R series transmission, so it's nothing but custom.

Mark III Supras are high on my short list... and a 1.5 or 2JZ-GE swap into one is what I think of as ideal. I know everybody loves turbos... but a high-ish compression atmospheric engine with a well chosen flywheel and ITBs and instant throttle response can be nice, too. Record-setting horsepower, and drag racing is not my thing... I just like a car that has enough power to get up and move it's own weight with authority, and has great feedback. 250-300 horsepower seems fine to me, if it responds well.
An SC300 or IS300 engine would be a nice base to start from, and I do slightly prefer the 89-92 face-lifted and updated A70 Supra details, anyway. I am one of the rare ones who prefer the A70 over the A80 and A60, also.
A slick shark-nosed fastback 3-door GT coupe with a smooth I6, manual gearbox, and independently-suspended rear-wheel-drive is a terrible thing to waste...
(and a Chevy V8 doesn't belong there... that is what an F-body is for... I wouldn't tell a Camaro enthusiast to put a 2JZ-GTE, RB26-DETT, EJ257, or a 20B Wankel, or into a 3rd or 4th gen F-body or a C4 Corvette.)

That was one of the problems I had with my 92 SVX, and it is sad. I would think there would be some sort of option for a different MAF, and a stand-alone ECU, if it is that imperative... A70s are great looking cars, and there isn't much else like them. Mustangs and F-bodies aren't IRS, and don't usually have I6s, let alone a DOHC I6.
Perhaps with aftermarket engine management... it might be worth converting to a later engine sub-frame, and a 1.5JZ, or 2JZ-GE or GTE engine, anyway.

I loved my Supras, but they're getting up there with age. I don't mind American engines in Japanese cars or vise-versa. I also prefer the A70 to the A80 (I learned to drive in an A80). It's just something about them that gives me chills.
